Lights and decorations go up in all Cornish towns and villages and there is a tremendous atmosphere. Each town has it's seperate late night for shopping, and on that night the streets are packed. I went to Truro on my first year back in Cornwall and there was a throng of people in the city centre, all enjoying themselves as if the extended shopping hours were little more than an excuse for socialising. Cornwall is largely a rural community, and a Christmas visit to (say) Truro or Penzance can still hold a significance which has been lost in other areas. "

In late September the village begins preparation for their famous Cornwall Christmas Lights, raising money for charity for nearly 40 years. Illuminated usually from the Saturday in the Middle of December, until the Friday at the end of the first week of the New Year. Switching on Ceremony, usually with Mousehole Male Voice Choir and a Brass Band present.

The National Seal Sanctuary is home to Britain’s leading marine animal rescue centre. Set in 40 acres of beautiful country on the picturesque Helford Estuary nr Helston.

First started in the 1950’s from a beach café at St Agnes, it was relocated to Gweek in 1975 as more pups were reported injured and needing our help.

With the rescue work as our first priority the sanctuary can help as many as 30 pups every winter, with emergency calls coming in day or night.

The Sanctuary is now home to many grey seals that couldn’t be released, as well as common seals, sea lions, goats, ponies and more recently short clawed Asian otters.

The fish in rectangular baskets of many colours, neatly stacked, and ticketted waiting for a buyer in the Auction. Some destined for restaurants in Cornwall, but most for foreign buyers Ice being delivered to trawlers about to put to sea, provisions being loaded for what may be a trip lasting nearly two weeks.

The smell of diesel and grease in the air, chains that are dragged along the sea bottom in front of the net, metal doors used to keep the net open, gill nets heaped in tangles of green in every spare corner. Plastic tubs containing long lines, neatly coiled ready for the next trip. Hooks stuck in rows. If you are really lucky you may even see Sammy a one eyed seal and a right show off. The Lifeboat Mabel Alice waiting for the emergency call. Don't trip on the gear and nets piled high. Keep away from unfenced drops, boats landing their catch, or loading stores and ice prior to going to sea. You enter the working harbour solely at your risk.

Why not visit the Pichard Works ? Where Cornish Salt Pilchards are pressed using screw presses before being packed into wooden barrels for export to Italy, much as they have done for the last 90 years. Or see the shipwrights progress on the restoration of the Cornish Lugger 'Ripple', built in 1896, and the fascinating black and white photographs displayed on the yard's walls. There are lots of places to stay in and around West Cornwall Bed and Breakfast."
